Homeschool Evaluations

I offer homeschool evaluations each summer. These evaluations satisfy the “evidence of progress” requirement for Virginia homeschoolers. In my evaluations, I aim to help to guide and inform your homeschooling, as well as provide the necessary Evidence of Progress report to submit to the state for your end-of-year paperwork.

During the evaluations, I focus primarily on math and English, and I use an interview-style evaluation to assess where your child is in comparison to the state standards. I am happy to work with all forms of homeschooling, including unschooling, tightly curriculum-driven homeschooling, and everything in between. If you would like to bring a portfolio of work from the year, especially for the other subjects, I am always happy to include that in your evaluation process, but it is not required.

During the evaluation, I will spend roughly an hour with your child (this may run a bit shorter with younger children). Afterward, I will spend around 15-20 minutes with you to discuss the big take-aways from what I saw. This “parent-teacher conference” can be a very fruitful aspect of the evaluation for homeschool families. I am happy to do this on the phone after the evaluation if you prefer. I am also happy to schedule a longer curriculum consultation with you for a reduced fee if you would like my help planning your focus and approach for the following year. You will then receive an Evidence of Progress letter in pdf form to submit to your district's superintendent, which is due August 1. I try to get these letters out within a week to 10 days after our evaluations. If you are scheduling multiple evals with me, I offer an additional sibling discount.

I prefer to do the evaluations in person, but this year I am continuing to offer both zoom evaluations and indoor in-person evaluations at my home near the Waldorf School. I am happy to mask during indoor sessions, upon request. All manipulatives will be sterilized between clients. I think this is a much more natural way to do these evals, but I will leave it to your own comfort to decide.

If your child is in Kindergarten this year, (younger than 6 years old on Sept 30, 2023) you are not required to submit an Evidence of Progress letter for Kindergarten. However, it can be very helpful to do an evaluation for your own records and planning purposes and to provide a baseline for future evaluations. I do Kindergarten evaluations at a reduced price, and they include the in-person session and parent consult, but not the EOP letter. (If you would like the EOP letter anyway, it would be the same price as a normal eval.)
