Strawberry Kindergarten and First Grade Pod

During the 2024-25 school year, I will be running a homeschool pod coop class based out of my home for Kindergarteners and First Graders. We will be taking inspiration from a wide variety of teaching styles, curricula, and best practices. I have discovered that my daughter is a social learner, and I started this program two years ago to help build a learning cohort for her. It has been a wonderful success for the last two years, and I am delighted to bring Strawberry Kindergarten back for a group of younger students.

The pod will run on Wednesday mornings from 9-12, with a plan to expand to Mondays or Fridays the following year for first/second grade. To enable more comprehensive curriculum planning, the intention is for students to attend each Wednesday morning for the full academic year September-May.

We will have both a daily and weekly rhythm to cultivate predictability and structure, while still having ample time for the children to do the open-ended play that is so necessary for this age group. We have had a wonderful group of older students over the last two years, and I am so delighted to bring back Strawberry Kindergarten for some younger siblings and friends. I look forward to continuing both programs into the future.

We have six students in our current group, and have a parent helper each day, which gives us a 3-1 ratio. We will work on social skills, academic skills, fine and gross motor, and life skills. I use a mixture of Walford-inspired activities, published curricula, and integrated project-based learning.

I have learned from experience that I would like to have another adult available as an assistant each day. I have found that is essential to have another adult to help with all of the little things that small children need throughout the day, even with a small group. I hope to have someone from each of the other families come in at least once per month to serve as an assistant to the class, as a “coop” style program. If you, your spouse, or local grandparents have any special skills, I would love to feature them in our program as well. Coming in to assist will give the parents a hands-on experience of the class, and also reduce the cost for families.
